State Highpoints Kansas - 4,039-foot Mount Sunflower

Kansas’ highest peak and the 28th highest US state summit, 4,039-foot Mount Sunflower is located in the far west portion of Kansas, not far from the Colorado border. With only 24 feet of prominence, Mount Sunflower is an unranked point about 20 miles south of Kanorado, Kansas on I-70. Sunflower is a driveup, and is wheelchair accessible. To reach Sunflower, take Exit 1 off of I-70 at the town of Kanorado. Go 13.4 miles south on Kansas State Highway 3, that turns to gravel after 6.5 miles. Turn left (east) onto SH 50, go 0.5 mile, and turn right (south) onto another good gravel road. Follow this road south for 8.0 miles, passing a sign for Mt. Sunflower en route. At another Mt. Sunflower sign, turn right onto a dirt road, go 1 mile, turn right at another Mt. Sunflower sign, cross a cattle guard, and proceed a short distance to the highpoint marker that contains a large metal sculpture of a sunflower. Park and explore this unique highpoint that consists of numerous artifacts. There used to be a marker that read, “In 1870, on this site, nothing happened!” but it was stolen. The highpoint is on private property, so do what you can to keep the area clean. In January of 2022, this highpoint received 27 inches of snow, and in the summer it can be brutally hot, so plan your visit accordingly.
